Risk Categories Explained
Do Not Use
Square - Merchant User Agreement Section 6 explicitly names "occult materials" and defines prohibited items as anything that "claims to perform a supernatural or metaphysical act." Active enforcement documented since 2015.
High Risk
Stripe - Explicitly prohibited in Japan, Mexico, and Thailand. In other markets, psychic and fortune-telling services require case-by-case approval. Account terminations reported in esoteric practitioner communities. The risk persists even for practitioners who have operated for months - a pattern of disputes can trigger a review.
Venmo for Business - Operates under the same PayPal Acceptable Use Policy. Same prohibition, same termination risk.
Moderate Risk
PayPal - Explicitly prohibited in PayPal's Alternative Payment Methods Terms. Enforcement has historically been inconsistent - many esoteric practitioners have operated through PayPal without issue. However, one dispute-heavy month can trigger an account review that surfaces the policy violation.
Recommended
Payhip - Has a dedicated page supporting "sell psychic readings online." Routes through Stripe and PayPal on the backend but provides a merchant-protection layer. Practitioners selling readings through Payhip operate under Payhip's terms, not directly under Stripe/PayPal ToS. Best entry point for new and established esoteric businesses.
NowPayments - Crypto-only. No Visa/Mastercard network restrictions apply. 0.5-1% fees are significantly lower than card processing rates. Limitation: crypto audience only.
High-Volume Specialists
High-risk merchant accounts (Signature Payments, CorePay, PayDiverse) are purpose-built for psychic and esoteric merchants. Higher fees (3-5%+) and possible rolling reserves are the cost of reliable processing. These make financial sense at $5,000+/month in revenue.
Payment Platform Integration Notes
Some course and community platforms use specific processors under the hood:
- Kajabi: Uses Stripe and PayPal. For esoteric courses (not live readings), the risk profile is lower than for psychic services - but consult your platform and processor policies.
- Thinkific Payments: Stripe-backed. 0% transaction fees if you use it, but the underlying Stripe risk applies.
- Circle: Stripe-backed. Same note.
- Mighty Networks: Stripe-backed.
- Payhip: Stripe + PayPal backend, but with Payhip's merchant protection layer.
For practitioners selling esoteric courses rather than live readings, the ToS risk with Stripe-backed platforms is lower. The clearest prohibitions target "psychic services" and "fortune-telling" as services, not educational content about those practices. That distinction is not guaranteed - treat it as a reduced risk, not zero risk.
Recommended Stack by Business Type
Solo practitioner selling live readings: Primary: Payhip Free or Plus. Secondary: NowPayments for crypto audience.
Esoteric course creator: Primary: Kajabi, Teachable, or Thinkific (Stripe-backed platforms carry lower risk for educational content). Backup: Payhip.
High-volume metaphysical business ($5k+/month): Primary: High-risk merchant account (Signature Payments or CorePay). Supplementary: NowPayments.
